AI Godfather Yann LeCun's AMI Labs Raises $1.3 Billion with Singapore as Key Base

Date: March 10, 2026

In what marks one of the largest AI startup funding rounds in Asia this year, Yann LeCun—the legendary AI pioneer often called one of the "godfathers of AI"—has raised US$1.03 billion (S$1.31 billion) for his new venture AMI Labs, with Singapore serving as a critical base for the company's Asia-Pacific expansion.

A Historic Vote of Confidence in Singapore

The funding round, announced on March 10, 2026, values AMI Labs at US$3.5 billion. The round was co-led by Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek and Shopee owner Sea, with additional backing from Cathay Innovation, Bezos Expeditions (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos's family office), chip giant Nvidia, and billionaire investor Mark Cuban.

Speaking to The Straits Times, LeCun emphasized Singapore's strategic importance: "Singapore is a very important location for us. We have quite a lot of links in Singapore, and partners here and in Asia generally. The talent pool is great, too."

Beyond LLMs: The Path to Advanced Machine Intelligence

AMI Labs is not building another large language model. Instead, the company is pioneering "advanced machine intelligence"—an approach where AI models learn primarily from visual inputs to build representations of the real world, similar to how humans develop mental models to reason and guide actions.

"These systems predict how situations evolve, and how actions lead to consequences, so that they can plan sequences of actions under real-world constraints, with an emphasis on safety and reliability," AMI Labs said in a statement.

LeCun explained that this approach differs fundamentally from current large language models: "Advanced machine intelligence will be safer and, in a way, more controllable." He demonstrated this by showing prototypes that can recognize impossible scenarios—like a ball turning into a cube or disappearing—and identify them as impossible, demonstrating a form of common sense that current AI systems lack.

Singapore's Growing AI Ecosystem

The AMI Labs investment represents a significant endorsement of Singapore's AI ecosystem. The company has established offices in Paris (its headquarters), New York, Montreal, and Singapore. The Singapore office currently has four staff based at WeWork in Robinson Road, with plans to grow to 20 employees within the year.

The first phase of Singapore expansion will focus on research and development, building AI infrastructure alongside the global team. The second phase will involve transferring technology to industrial partners for real-world applications, including robotics on factory floors.

This announcement follows Singapore's recent Budget 2026 initiatives, which included creating a National Artificial Intelligence Council chaired by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and providing six months of free premium AI subscriptions to Singaporeans taking SkillsFuture AI courses.

A Different Vision for AI's Future

LeCun offered a reassuring perspective on AI's development: "The fantasy that AI systems are going to replace us because they are smarter is just false—and is something that can be prevented by design." He believes AI will ultimately serve as tools under human control, much like how historical technological advances have automated certain tasks while creating new opportunities.

"Our relationship to AI systems would be similar to all of us being a boss of a team of AI assistants that will solve problems and accomplish tasks for us," LeCun explained.
