Google Expands R&D Footprint in Singapore with New Engineering Hub

Singapore's position as Southeast Asia's AI powerhouse continues to strengthen. Google has announced a significant expansion of its research and development footprint in the Lion City, marking another vote of confidence in Singapore's thriving tech ecosystem.

A New Chapter in Google's Singapore Story

In an event held on February 10th, Google revealed plans to scale its teams across software engineering, user experience design, and research science. The expansion places a strategic focus on cloud engineering teams, reflecting the growing importance of cloud-based AI solutions in the region.

"We are growing our engineering and R&D teams in the country – not just to bring Google's technology here, but to build solutions alongside Singapore that solve its unique challenges and drive new growth," said Ben King, Managing Director of Google Singapore.

This announcement builds on the opening of the Google DeepMind Research Lab in Singapore last November, which was established to better study Southeast Asia's cultural nuances and develop more culturally relevant AI solutions.

Google Cloud Singapore Engineering Center

The centerpiece of this expansion is the new Google Cloud Singapore Engineering Center. This hub will house engineers and support teams dedicated to partnering with firms across various industries, including robotics and clean energy, to solve complex technological challenges.

Moe Abdula, Vice-President for Customer Engineering at Google Cloud Asia-Pacific, emphasised the strategic advantage of co-locating software engineers with the DeepMind lab in Singapore. This arrangement, he said, allows Google to "transform research into ready-to-deploy products at rapid speed."

The company also unveiled an AI Centre of Excellence for Security, which will focus on research to tackle emerging threats in the agentic AI space while advancing security, privacy, and safety on mobile platforms.

Empowering Singapore's AI Workforce

Beyond infrastructure, Google is making substantial investments in developing Singapore's AI talent pool. The tech giant launched Startup School: Prompt to Prototype, an online training course designed to teach founders how to use Google's AI products, Gemini and AI Studio, to turn ideas into AI prototypes quickly.

Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo expressed her support: "We believe very much that whatever it is that we create in Singapore goes so much further when others get a chance to benefit from them."

Reaching 50,000 Singaporeans Through AI Living Labs

In partnership with the Ministry of Education, Google introduced AI Living Labs – initiatives aimed at young people and educators to learn and create AI innovations through hands-on workshops and industry collaborations.

The first AI Living Lab has been launched at the Institute of Technical Education College East, with a second planned for Nanyang Polytechnic. These facilities have an ambitious target to reach 50,000 Singaporeans by 2027.

Additionally, Google is partnering with the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) on the Skills Ignition SG AI Challenge. This initiative aims to train 500 graduates and mid-career professionals in AI skills through a two-month accelerator programme covering AI workflows for accounting, human resources, and legal sectors.

Strengthening AI Singapore's Mission

Google's philanthropy arm, Google.org, has provided US$1 million in funding to AI Singapore's Project Aquarium – an open data platform for Southeast Asia's languages. This funding will improve the quality and availability of regional datasets, enabling developers to create culturally relevant AI solutions.

Since 2020, Google's upskilling programmes have helped nearly 350,000 Singaporeans gain new digital skills. The Skills Ignition SG programme, which this new challenge builds upon, has already reached 28,000 Singaporeans.

Google's continued investment signals strong confidence in Singapore's AI ecosystem. With the combination of world-class research facilities, government support, and corporate partnerships, Singapore is cementing its status as Southeast Asia's AI innovation hub.

As Ben King summarised: "By working with the government, schools and businesses, we're embedding AI training everywhere – from the classroom to the workplace – to empower every Singaporean with the skills they need to stay job-ready and create new opportunities with AI."
